History

In May, 1916, the first bar of metal was cast at the Western Brass Mill founded by Franklin Olin in East Alton, Illinois.  Since that day, the Olin Brass organization has broken new ground in the research, development, and delivery of “tailor-made” copper and copper-alloy products.  Since the very beginning of it all, Olin Corporation has stood for high quality products and customer service. Due to the high goals set by the founders of Olin Corporation, an ammunition company founded in 1892 has grown into a company of highly diversified products.

Today, Olin Brass produces more than 60 copper-based alloys and currently holds 37 U.S. patents associated with High Performance Alloys (HPAs) and 39 other U.S. patents related to various processing and technical capabilities.

Major facilities include a world-class casting and rolling mill in East Alton, IL; a specialized reroll and foil mill in Waterbury, CT (Somers Thin Strip); a reroll mill in Bryan, OH (Bryan Metals); a leading brass rod producer in Montpelier, OH (Chase Brass); a welded tube mill in Cuba, MO (Olin Fineweld Tube); a highly capable stamping operation in East Alton, IL (Olin Fabricated Products) plus additional production and service facilities in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Mexico.  All of Olin Brass’ sheet and strip mills are ISO 9000-2000 certified, and its stamping operation in East Alton is TS 16949 certified.
